How does biography or nonfiction differ from historical fiction? What commonalities do
they share?
Nonfiction differs from historical fiction in the fact that historical fiction is about made-up characters,
situations, or events. Nonfiction is defined by its sole truth. Of course, some historical fiction contains
accounts of facts that may be accurate, such as a story about a romance during the Victorian era, but
nonfiction contains no fantastical accounts, events, or characters. Nonfiction also usually references
the source of its facts unless it is an autobiography.
