Lesson Title: Dissecting sentences to discover new science Vocab words

Prerequisite Skills/Prior Knowledge:
How to read, write and some knowledge on how to dissect sentences to find new word meaning. They will also need
previous knowledge on parts of a plant.

Use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.
3-LS1-1. Develop models to describe that organisms have unique and diverse life cycles but all have in
common birth, growth, reproduction, and death. [Clarification Statement: Changes organisms go
through during their life form a pattern.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment of plant life cycles is
limited to those of flowering plants. Assessment does not include details of human reproduction.]

Students will be able to use sentences to dissect and find the meaning of new vocab words related to
their understanding of a plant and its reproduction with 85% accuracy given each work and being able to
match it to a sentence to understand its meaning.

Specific ways that academic language (vocabulary, functions, discourse, syntax) is used by students to participate
in learning tasks through reading, writing, listening, and/or speaking to demonstrate their understanding.
Syntax is used with in this lesson by students writing and connecting sentences
together.
Language Function(s):
Students pars will receive a stack of sentences with underlined vocabulary words each students will have to read and
dissect the sentence to determine the meaning of the word underlined. They will then write their determined meaning
of each work in their vocabulary notebook and science journal.

Includes words and phrases that are used within disciplines including: (1) words and phrases with subject-specific
meanings that differ from meanings used in everyday life (e.g., table); (2) general academic vocabulary used across
disciplines (e.g., compare, analyze, evaluate); and (3) subject-specific words defined for use in the discipline.
