Topic 3 DQ 1
Review the "Power Dynamic Flashcards" in the topic resources to explore how
power is established in conversation. Describe one way it is established, and one
technique you might use to block that technique from being successful.
Hello class and professor,
The nonverbal aspects of conversation are huge in my mind in establishing power as well as
blocking a person from establishing too much power in a conversation. One way power is
established in a conversation is by a person's tone. Tone in a conversation shapes the
conversation and has a huge impact on the outcome of the conversation. If one person focuses
on their tone then they have all the power in a conversation and can twist it into whatever they
want. The textbook says that the relationship component is more of the nonverbal message in
the conversation (Olson et al., 2022). I think a way to block that power is to pay attention to
someone's tone and how it relates to what that person is saying. I also think that knowing who
you are talking to and how communication normally flows in the conversation between those
involved can help establish an even level of power in the conversation.

Topic 3 DQ 2
As you consider assertive, passive, and aggressive communication, which type is most
likely to use overt communication, and which is likely to use covert communication?
How effective is each strategy?
Hello class and professor,
Overt communication is when a person says something and it conveys exactly what they
wanted it to where as covert communication is relying on anything to convey a message
besides actually saying the message (Newton, 2020). I think that assertive communication goes
with overt communication the most because when a person uses assertive communication it
means they are comfortable enough to precisely convey what they need to say (Olson et al.,
2022). I think passive communication goes with covert communication the most because a
person that communicates passively does not actively convey the actual message in a straight
forward manner (Olson et al., 2022). I think that good communications can be assertive but
float between overt and covert styles, and I believe a big part of that is being able to read a
crowd and determine the best method to get a point across. I think for the general population,
overt communication is the most effective. Many people struggle to read between the lines or
pick up on different nonverbal communications, so just straight saying what needs to be said
