One of the five elements of emotional intelligence is self-awareness. Explain what it means to be self-
aware and describe why emotional intelligence is crucial for effective leadership. Discuss what
behaviors someone with a high degree of self-awareness would demonstrate within the context of
leading and managing groups. Provide an example.

We are all unique individuals with differing wants, needs, and methods of expressing

emotions. To be successful in our work and our ability to relate to others we must have the

ability to determine how to manage ourselves and others. This is emotional intelligence (EI).

Emotional intelligence (EI) is how we understand and manage emotions and how we recognize

our own emotions and the emotions of others (Boyatzis & McKee, 2005). “An emotionally

intelligent leader can stimulate and foster innovative behaviors among their team” (Butler, 2021,

p. 19). Self-awareness is arguably the most important characteristic as it relates to emotional

intelligence. Self-awareness is the ability to know yourself, understand your emotions and

feelings, strengths and limitations. Self-awareness is to be aware of your reactions, tendencies,

and responses. With a high level of self-awareness, you will be self-confident in your worth and

capabilities (Boyatzis & McKee, 2005). “Characteristics of a self-aware leader are transparency,

resilience, and accountability” (Butler, 2021, p. 19). Leaders with high self-awareness establish

relationships, create positive work culture, communicate, and are empathetic to their staff

(Butler, 2021).

In my time as a nurse, I have had a few different leaders from assistant managers up to

directors. The ones that were not successful and are not supported by their team are the ones who
