The History of Research in Behavioral Health Timeline

Behavioral health science has a long history and has evolved into a successful healing

approach over time. Being able to recognize when someone is feeling emotional, psychological,

or social instability is part of this science. When someone is exhibiting symptoms of poor

behavioral health, they may exhibit social isolation, substance misuse, disordered eating, or less

severe symptoms that could have detrimental effects. The effectiveness of behavioral health as a

science has been influenced by numerous events throughout its history. These occurrences can

include the DSM-5 framework, deinstitutionalization, and the effects of the World Wars. The

profession of behavioral health has evolved over time in response to these developments. This

essay will start by going over those modifications as well as each historical event and its

importance.

World War I began in 1914 with the murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. This conflict,

which lasted until 1918, pitted the world's allied powers against the central powers. Many

women had to take up full-time jobs and care for their children alone throughout the war, all the

while worrying about their husbands and other family members who were serving. There were

about 40 million deaths and injuries worldwide at the end of the conflict. As one might expect,

this led to severe anxiety and despair in many people, as well as trauma and post-traumatic stress

disorders. World Psychiatry claims that the psychological effects of shellshock and world wars

contributed to the success of psychological treatments. The World Health Organization called on

psychologists and other professionals to more effectively "support the implementation of

programs to repair psychological damage of war, conflicts, and natural disasters" because of the

long-term effects of war, which include endemic poverty, disabilities, and social/economic

decline. Following the war, research on psychological effects provided fresh insights and

remedies for the particular mental health issues that affected the general populace.
