Topic 4 DQ 1:
How is ethics defined in research and why is it important? Discuss two different ways in
which ethics can be compromised when conducting, using, and reporting data. Describe
strategies that can be implemented to ensure credibility and reliability of health care
research reports.
Ethics in health professions is commonly referred as a moral code, which is a set of standards to
distinguish what is right and wrong – a common example of medical ethics can be seen in the
Hippocratic Oath. However, research defines ethics as the norms, disciplines, or values for
conduct, to standardize acceptable and unacceptable behavior (Resnik, 2020). In other words,
research ethics is the application of professional codes and principles when conducting research;
applied to the gathering, analysis, recording, and publication of evidence from the study.
Typically, research ethics protect studied subjects whither regarding confidentiality, informed
consent, or welfare. However, there circumstances where ethics can be compressed in research.
Informed consent is a general issue when conducting research; consent requires the tested subject
to knowingly and voluntarily provided educated consent to participate in research. However, if
the researcher is unclear or is inconstant with information and does not disclose the potential
risks and expected benefits, on top of that it is essential to provider a disclaimer that treatment or
information may be withheld in the interest of the study – if not informed properly then the
subject had not given full informed consent. Another comprising issue is the protection of
confidentiality of participants. According to Resnik (2020) strategies to ensure credibility and
reliability in health research are: transparency, objectivity, caution, non-discrimination,
competence, integrity, etc. These ethical principles will ensure that report is acceptable and
credible.

Topic 4 DQ 2:
What is an ethical dilemma? Provide an example of an ethical dilemma that could occur in
your research project as you are using and reporting data. Discuss how you will respond to
this ethical dilemma to maintain the ethical integrity for your project.
In the world there are several situations which call for ethical questioning. Moral and ethical
dilemmas are situations in which a difficult choice must be made, which may compromise an
individual’s moral principle. Ethical dilemmas are presented in health care all the time, including
health care research. Whilst I conduct my own literature review of health care research, I may
come across ethical issues such as manipulation of data. If evidence is forged or altered, it may
result in distorted perception of data and can lead to false information (Louch, 2020). Therefore,
it is essential to find reliable and credible research to maintain ethical integrity.
