Topic 2 DQ 1
DQ: Discuss the similarities between the GCU Library online journal and database search
engines and public search engines like Google Scholar or Web of Science. Are there some
journals or databases that you cannot find? What other resources are available? Would
you consider the sources that you find through Google Scholar credible? What defines a
scholarly resource? How recent should the resource be to be considered valid?

Hello Professor Ott and Class,
There are several approaches and options for acquiring information when conducting research.
Finding and using credible references is the most important aspect of research; here is where the
GCU library comes in. The Grand Canyon University Library is a repository for journal articles,
eBooks, and videos, and it takes pride in being "the foundation of academic support for all
learning and research" (Grand Canyon University, 2019). The GCU library may be pretty useful
once you grasp how to correctly use search engines. There are academic resources accessible for
whichever subject you are researching, and the best part is that they are free for all students.
Google Scholar is yet another useful research tool, however it is not without problems. Google
Scholar, in my perspective, is easier to use and has a larger number of articles, but it lacks
videos, as does the GCU library. One thing I've noticed with Google Scholar is that I still feel the
need to double and triple-check the source's reliability, although this might just paranoid because
I've never seen one that isn't credible. Despite the fact that it is difficult to access, I routinely use
the NCBI data bank.
Whatever database or library you choose, make sure it is reliable and peer-reviewed so that all
assignments are based on facts rather than opinions. Checking the writers' credentials, as well as
the references given inside the article, is one way to ensure credibility. It is critical to identify
sources that are no more than ten years old in order to keep things relevant, but I try to keep them
within five to six years if possible and use websites that end in.gov, Edu, or.org when obtaining
content from a website rather than an actual publication. Many Blessings, Danielle
