NR 585NP Week 6 Collaboration Cafe: Research Ethics
Follow these guidelines when completing each component of the Collaboration Café. Contact
your course faculty if you have questions.
Include the following sections:
Application of Course Knowledge: Answer all questions/criteria with explanations and detail.
Describe how learning about the history of research ethics impacted your view of
biomedical research.
Consider the research you collected for your PICOT question. Discuss steps researchers
took to protect the rights of human subjects. What additional measures would you
recommend?
Describe common disparities in biomedical research. Did you find evidence of disparities
in the articles you reviewed for your PICOT question? If so, what were your findings?
Answer:
Impact of Learning about Research Ethics on Biomedical Research
Learning about the history of research ethics has significantly impacted my view of biomedical
research. It has highlighted the importance of ethical considerations in conducting research
involving human subjects. Understanding the historical context of unethical practices, such as the
Tuskegee Syphilis Study, has emphasized the need for stringent ethical guidelines and oversight
in biomedical research. This knowledge has made me more aware of the potential risks and
vulnerabilities of research participants and the critical role of researchers in upholding ethical
standards.
Protection of Human Subjects in PICOT Research
In the research collected for my PICOT question, researchers took several steps to protect the
rights of human subjects. These included obtaining informed consent, ensuring confidentiality
and privacy, minimizing risks, and obtaining institutional review board (IRB) approval.
Additionally, researchers implemented measures to ensure voluntary participation and provided
information about the study's purpose, procedures, and potential risks.
To further enhance the protection of human subjects, I would recommend additional measures
such as ensuring culturally sensitive informed consent processes, actively involving community
representatives in the research process, and conducting regular ethical training for researchers to
promote a deeper understanding of ethical principles and their application in research settings.
Disparities in Biomedical Research
Common disparities in biomedical research include underrepresentation of certain demographic
groups, unequal access to healthcare resources, and disparities in research funding. In the articles
reviewed for my PICOT question, evidence of disparities was found, particularly in the
