- Our society is built on the fundamentals of small groups.
- Examples of small groups include study groups, work teams, families, and support
groups.
- Nearly every aspect of our day-to-day lives is influenced by small groups: our families,
our jobs, our schools, and even our friends.

Defining Small-Group Communication
- What is Small-Group Communication?
- In small group communication, three or more people who share a goal works together to
achieve it through communication.
- it is important that people are highly engaged and motivated.


The importance of Learning about Small Groups
- According to a psychologist who studied small-group learning and communication,
people need to be included, loved, and in control.
- I personally always found if I was put in a small group i would work better because I'm
seen more and I would have more of an opportunity to voice my opinion.
- Inclusion - Being involved, Affection - Being cared for / caring for others, and Control -
To influence our environment
- Finally, small groups can be a useful tool for Americans and people of other cultures to
learn about our differences and other issues.
- There are various types and functions of small groups.

The types and functions of Small Groups
- Assigned Groups- Individuals appointed to be in a group
- Emergent Groups -When people form a cohesive group based on their own desire
or personal need.
- Friends who meet in high school form an of emergent group.
- Task-Oriented Groups - a group that is primarily focused on finding a solution to
a problem, making a product, providing a service, or engaging in other goal-
directed behavior.
- Relationship-Oriented Groups - Usually long-term, exist to meet our need for
inclusion and affection.
