Week 2: Collaboration Café
Explain the relationship of self-leadership to leadership
competency. How does a leader’s self-leadership skills
impact those they lead?
Self-leadership is the awareness of self and self-perception of
capabilities and self-objectives (Fitzpatrick et al., 2023). A practical
nurse leader can control their emotions, utilize effective
communication, and have the ability to motivate others (Fitzpatrick
et al., 2023). A leader should provide insight into the capacity of
those they lead to achieve organizational goals (Fitzpatrick et al.,
2023). By utilizing competency strategies, leadership competencies
can help nurse leaders achieve their self-leadership goals. For
instance, self-leadership theory assumes that people can self-
influence their behavior, motivation, and physical and psychological
health to attain their goals (Prinsloo & Jooste, 2022).
Self-leadership can have a significant impact on the nurse working
environment. For example, a nurse leader who is not in control of
their emotions lacks self-awareness, self-reflection, and self-care and
is not able to identify the needs of others (Fitzpatrick et al., 2023).
With leadership competencies, the nurse leader can positively
influence nurses, work behavior, motivate the staff to achieve
organizational goals, and improve the staff's overall performance by
creating a positive work environment (Prinsloo & Jooste, 2022).
Identify one self-leadership skill that you consider to be
strength.
Self-reflection is one of the self-leadership skills that I consider to
be one of my strengths. After every leadership encounter, I take
the time to reflect on my strengths and weaknesses. For instance,
there have been times that I have been so focused on the task ahead
that my approach, communication style, listening skills, and how I
deliver the message can have a negative effect. This style of
approach tends to create an adverse reaction, and the staff tends to
reject and criticize any initiatives (Alsadaan et al., 2023).
During self-reflection, I recall interactions I have had in the past with
other leaders, and it helps me remember those negative emotions.
These negative emotions affect my performance and ability to handle
critical situations and increase feelings of isolation, high-stress levels,
and job dissatisfaction. My self-awareness goal is to avoid repeating
the same negative leadership behavior.

opportunity for improvement.

my actions are perceived by others. The nursing environment is
