LEADERSHIP SELF-ASSESSMENT
Leadership Self-Assessment
Leadership is a rewarding field. To be an effective leader, one must reflect on the overall points and
competency of their leadership. In this paper, I will be discussing my personal leadership
experience, assessing my leadership style and reflecting my strengths and weaknesses as a leader
and how I can improve my strengths to have a better impact on those I lead.
Personal Leadership Experience
Leadership is something that has always come very naturally: in high school, I was elected into
the position of senior class president, and in nursing school, I was the elected president of our nursing
class. Currently, I am in the role of Clinical Nurse Manager. In my role, I am responsible for the
supervising the floor operations of a 40-bed medical surgical unit. The unit usually runs with seven
registered nurses, four patient care associates, and one health unit coordinator. In this leadership role,
some of my responsibilities include ensuring the patients are rounded on and satisfied with the care
they are receiving from the staff, auditing charts to confirm that the staff are charting what is expected
of them, addressing the concerns of physicians, employees, patients and patient family members and
overall day to day operations of the unit.
As a leader, I believe I am effective in getting the results that are expected from upper
management, while keeping the staff happy and ensuring that morale on the unit is up. Although there
are some instances that staff may not be happy with decisions that are made by upper management, it
is my responsibility to manage up the situation and explain to the staff the rationale for the change and
how it impacts and improves patient care. “Communication is believed to be one of the key
foundational elements required for a positive culture, increased engagement, and reduced burnout”
(Willman & Lucke-Wold, 2021). The measurement in being an effective leader is not just
based on outcomes and numbers, but it is also ensuring optimism and satisfaction amongst the staff.
