Horizontal Organization

firm organization in which the firm has separate departments for separate phases of the
project, such as design, production, and construction administration. No single
individual or team takes the project from start to finish.



Vertical Organization

also known as Studio Style organization. One project will be staffed by a single team or
"studio" from start to finish. Each team may specialize in certain project typologies



Matrix Organization

Organization form that includes both vertical and horizontal organization. PMs are
maintained during all phases of project and are augmented throughout the project



Evidence Based Design

A design process that begins in the post occupancy evaluation. Data is collected on
energy use of building, thermal performance, and occupant satisfaction to more
precisely develop future designs.



Building Information Modeling (BIM)

A tool that enables the project team to develop a virtual building model composed of 3D
building components and properties on which an architect can chisel out and work
through the design solution.

Architect of Record

Architect who is in responsible control of the construction documents and is licensed in

of construction.

How the total architectural fee is apportioned by phases. In a traditional
design-bid-build project, for example, about 15% of the project fee would be spent on
Schematic Design, 20% on Design Development, 45% on Construction
Documents-through bidding and negotiation-and 20% on the Construction
Administration phase.
