PSYCHOANALYSIS, GESTALT, HUMANISM, COGNITIVE REVOLUTION
1) PSYCHOANALYSIS
SIGMUND FREUD
● Health issues= depression and cancer
● DRUSE USE= cocaine and nicotine
● THE COUCH= HYPNOSIS
● FREE ASSOCIATION= speak whatever comes to mind
● The role of your sex life= unconscious motivation
THE COUCH= makes you more relaxed
FREE ASSOCIATION= trying to get to the unconscious
● Childhood experiences= trauma that starts early on and characterizes your life, you try to
suppress those memories (try to make it unconscious… but it si very much conscious)
● Sexual experiences linked to motivation
● Relates to childhood development to different parts of your body, ex: smo who smokes
maybe didn't get enough milk from “mothers breastfeeding” as a child
***ALL OF THESE SCHOOLS OF THOUGHT ARE NOT ALL ACCURATE, BUT
THEY ARE USEFUL…
HYSTERIA= condition related to women with physical and emotional symptoms with no
apparent physical cause
THEORY= many of his patients problems came from the unconscious mind
● Access to the unconscious through DREAM ANALYSIS---> first words that came to
mind slip of the tongue….
PSYCHOANALYTIC THEORY= the role of the unconscious and childhood experiences
(clinical psychology)
, PERSONALITY
● Our personality develops from a conflict between 2 forces=
1) our biological aggressive and pleasure seeking drive VS
2) internal (socialized) control over these drives
WE HAVE 3 INTERACTIVE SYSTEMS within our mind that help balance these 2 competing
forces=
1) ID= our most PRIMITIVE DRIVES AND URGES FROM BIRTH (can be linked to
impulses and urges early greek philo)
2) EGO: rational part of our personality, this is what others see, balance the demands
of the ID and SUPEREGO
3) SUPEREGO= the moral compass that tells us how we are to behave this is
developed as a child socialize and learns from others
CARL JUNG
● Used word association test to study people struggling with psychosis in hopes to discover
the nature of their unconscious thought process
● FOCUSED ON DREAMS
● HAD 2 CONSCIOUSNESS
● He tried freud's idea on dream interpretation in his practice, he found them effective
ANALYTICAL PSYCHOLOGY= works on balancing opposing forces of conscious and
unconscious thoughts and experience within one’s personality
ARCHETYPES= represented by universal themes in various cultures (through biology, we are
handed these themes and the same type of symbols)
CRITICISMS= unclear, inconsistent
