ON-THE-JOB TRAINING METHODS

DEFINITION: Training method where a trainee receives instruction and
training at his/her workstation from a supervisor or experienced co-worker.
- Most common method of training, been practiced since the middle
ages.
- Formalized concept by the united states army in WWII
TRAINING METHODS
1. Job instruction training: formalized, structured, systemic
approach that consists of..
- Preparation - job is broken into small tasks, prepares
equipment and supplies necessary & allocates time frame for
learning each task - 182
- instruction - telling, showing, explaining & demonstrating task
to the trainee - 183-184
- performance -trainee perfs task under trainers guidance,
trainer provides feedback & reinforcement
- follow-up - trainee is left alone to perform task. Performance is
monitored by trainer who gives support and feedback - 185
2. Performance-Aid: A device at a job that helps an employee
perform their job.
3. Job Rotation: trainees are exposed to many functions and
areas within an organization.
4. Apprenticeship: Training for skilled trades workers that
combines OJT w/classroom instruction.
5. Coaching: A more experienced and knowledgeable person is
formally called upon to help another person develop insights
and techniques pertinent to the accomplishment of their job and
improvement of their job performance.
6. Mentoring: A senior member of an organization takes a
personal interest in the career of a junior employee.
APPROACHES TO ON-THE-JOB-TRAINING
1. On-the-spot lecture: gather trainees into groups and tell
them how to do the job.
