Osteopathy (also called osteopathic medicine) relies on manual contact for diagnosis and
treatment. It respects the relationship of body, mind and spirit in health and disease; it lays
emphasis on the structural and functional integrity of the body and the body's intrinsic tendency
for self healing. - ANS-Osteopathy (WHO definition)
Facilitating normal self regulating and healing mechanisms in a person or animal, by addressing
areas of tissue strain/dysfunction/restriction or stress that may impede neural, vascular and
biomechanical mechanisms. - ANS-Osteopathic manual therapy
A therapy provided by a GRADUATED member of an ACCREDITED osteopathic school, and a
member of an osteopathic ASSOCIATION that constitutes a full understanding of osteopathic
principles; anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and their relationship to each other. It is a full
understanding of the principles, then applied guided by the ability to think through a reasonable
approach, application and dosage, with the understanding that the body is self healing and self

Applying techniques, principles and skill acquired during the academic semester for
development of the osteopathic student, to render osteopathic treatment at the culmination of
their four years of study - ANS-Practice
