Business Research Methods (BRM) Chapter 1
Statistics - ANS-The science (or art) of data.
Individuals - ANS-The objects described by a set of data.
- It can be people, animals, or things.
Variable - ANS-Any characteristic of an individual.
- It can take different values for different individuals.
Data - ANS-The actual measurements recorded for individuals.
Categorical Variable - ANS-A Variable that simply places an individual into one of several
groups or categories
Numerical Variable - ANS-A Variable that takes numerical values for which arithmetic operations
such as adding and averaging make sense.
- Also referred to as Quantitative Variable
Response Variable - ANS-Variable that measures an outcome or result of a study.
Observational Study - ANS-Observes individuals and measures variables of interest but does
not intervene in order to influence the responses.
What's the purpose of an Observational Study? - ANS-The purpose is to describe some group
or situation.
Population - ANS-A statistical study is the entire group of individuals about which we want
information.
Sample - ANS-The part of the population from which we actually collect information and is used
to draw conclusions about the whole.
Census - ANS-A sample survey that attempts to include the entire population in the sample.
Experiement - ANS-Deliberately imposes some treatment on individuals in order to observe their
responses
