Unit Eight | Becoming an MLT
Accreditation - ANS-The process by which an agency or an organization evaluates and
recognizes a program of study or an instititution as meeting certain predetermined
qualifications or standards; applies only to institutions and programs.
Accreditation Canada - ANS-A not-for-profit organization that accredits all MLT
programs in canada, as majority of canadian hosptials.
Clinical Practicum - ANS-Conducted at the affiliated training sites during our program.
Semester 8's includes competency evaluations that must be signed off by the hospital,
and online exams that are to be completed via D2L. Semester 3's includes introductory
exposure to various lab procedures and specimen collection.
Certification - ANS-The process by which a non-governmental agency or association
grants recognition to an individual who has met certain predetermined qualifications
(competencies) specified by that agency or association.
CSMLS - ANS-National certifying body for MLT's and MLA's and the national
professional society for Canada's medical laboratories. Not-for-profit, funded entirely by
membership dues and operational revenues, not by government. Promotes and
maintains a standard for MLT's, and protects the professional identity and interests of
the MLT. Conducts exams across Canada, and issues certification to candidates who
meet the prescribed standard. Provides learning assessments to non-Canadian MLT's
looking to become certified here, as well as opportunities for professional growth.
Good Standing - ANS-Practicing MLT's in NL must maintain _______ ____________
with CSMLS, which includes paying annual registration fees.
CSMLS Fees - ANS-Includes annual registration fees, and personal liability insurance,
which includes professional liability (malpractice) and legal defense (disciplinary
hearings and criminal proceedings)
Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science - ANS-CSMLS
CSMLS Exam - ANS-The professional association of MLT's working throughout
Newfoundland and Labrador. Maintains a code of conduct and a code of ethics for
MLT's. As well as providing medical laboratory professionals with representation,
