- What is the speed of propagation of light? There was a time when it
was thought that light could propagate instantaneously, at infinitely
high speeds. All observations supported such a claim. For example,
it was noticed that sound needed some time to cover a large
distance, demonstrated, for instance, by the occurrence of echo.
However, in the case of light no such effect was observed.
