Scene 1:
This scene establishes the supernatural element in the play and introduces the three
witches who reveal their plan to meet Macbeth.
Scene 2:
After hearing the report about the battle and about Macbeth’s glorious feats on the
battlefield Duncan orders that the title of Thane of Cawdor be given to Macbeth.
Scene 3:
The witches encounter Macbeth and Banquo on their return to Duncan’s camp. They
prophesize that Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor as well as the King of Scotland.
They also predict that Banquo rather than Macbeth will produce a line of Kings.
Macbeth finds that he is to become Thane of Cawdor and considers the rest of the
prophecy.
Scene 4:
Back at the Royal court Duncan names Malcolm as the heir to the scottish throne.
Macbeth sees this as an obstacle that he must overcome to become King of Scotland.
Scene 5:
Lady Macbeth reads a letter that Macbeth has a new title. She reveals her ambition and
predicts that Macbeth will not have the will to do anything about it. She will need to
persuade him. Mcbeth refuses to discuss it when he arrives/
