Liyema Foods
Nomangesi Liyema started working at Woolworths in 1986 as a Sales Assistant. In
1996, when she marked her 10th anniversary in the Woolworths’ sales team, Liyema
knew all that could be known in sales. She was a professional salesperson and her
career in sales was looking bright. In the same year, tragedy struck Liyema and it
changed her life forever. Her son was involved in a car accident and sustained serious
injuries. The injuries were so serious that he needed someone to take care of him 24-
7. Since Liyema could not afford to hire a nurse, she resigned from her job to take care
of her child. Liyema recalls that her son’s accident was enough to break her spirit, but
she refused to be broken. She remembered the many lessons she learnt in a sales
environment. Of these, Liyema recounts, that the three most important strategies for
any salesperson to close a sale are patience, persistence, and having a game plan. At
the time her son was in an accident, she was almost a broken woman. In the early
days
after her son’s accident, all she had was hope and prayer. One day in 2001, Liyema
realised that self-pity and tears rolling down her cheeks will not bring food on the table.
