Dealing With Challenging
Behaviour
Unit 27

Describe the characteristics and causes of challenging behaviour
(P1)
In this part of my assignment I am going to be describing the characteristics
and causes of challenging behaviour. To begin with, behaviour is defned as
"the way in which one acts or conducts oneself, especially towards others"
(Google Dictionary, 2017) and challenging means to test one's ability. So, the
defnition of challenging behaviour "culturally abnormal behaviour(s) of such
intensity, frequency or duration that the physical safety HYPERLINK

serious jeopardy, or behaviour which is likely to seriously limit or deny access
to the use of ordinary community facilities". HYPERLINK

Causes
The causes of challenging behaviour can vary in diferent circumstances. It
can stem from biological causes. For instance, Lesch-Nyhan syndrome is
linked to self-injuring behaviour due to diferences in how the brain handles
chemicals and hormones (No name, no date). Additionally, it can be a sign of
abuse, distress, anger, frustration, discomfort or pain. Withdrawal of co-
operation (for example, at mealtimes) may be the only means available to a
highly physically dependent person of showing emotions. Finally, challenging
behaviour can be a response to the environment. This could include under- or
over-stimulation, poor physical environment - such as extremes in
temperature or noise levels - inconsistencies in staf including stafng levels,
awareness, approach and training (No name, no date).
Characteristics
Characteristics are defned as "a feature or quality belonging typically to a
person, place, or thing and serving to identify them" (Google Dictionary,
2017). The characteristics of challenging behaviour often include self-
injurious behaviour such as "hitting, headbutting, biting, scratching"
(Wikipedia, 2017). It can also include aggressive behaviour for example
"hitting others, headbutting, shouting, swearing, screaming, scratching
others, spitting, biting, punching, kicking" (Wikipedia, 2017). Additionally, it
