Unit 1 Sociology In-class activity Define Sociology and explain what things sociology actually examines - Sociology is the scientific study of society and human interactions. Sociology studies the way humans interact with one another individually and as a group. Things that sociology actually examines are all the different things that influence people's lives. Such as family, ethnicity, class, gender, race, religion,etc. What are the roles of sociologists? - 1. Sociologists create theories of human interaction by using the scientific method. They then find evidence that either proves or disproves their theory. 2. Sociologists look for relationships and connections. 3. Sociologists try to come up with reasonings for questions and problems that happen within society. Such as Inequality, Deviance, Relationships, Conflict, etc. Contextualize the beginnings of sociology and how the field actually arose. - In the 19th century in Western Europe, the European society had been dominated by hereditary Aristocratic families for a long time. Then industrialization led to more access to goods and wealth which led to an increase in urban areas. Because of industrialization, humans were now transforming from agricultural societies to industrialized societies. The division was now separated between factory owners and laborers. How is Sociology connected to the Scientific Revolution? - The Scientific Revolution is connected to sociology because in the 17th century scientific theory was making developments and the knowledge was changing about how humans observed the world. First off they started to use astronomical observations to talk about the Earth's position in the world which led to them later on applying science to biological creations and then eventually was used to explain social order. For each of the following sociologists summarize their theories and what they contributed to the field of Sociology: Auguste Comte - He was French and was considered the father of sociology and he was one of the first scientists to use the theories of physical science and apply it to studying society. For each of the following sociologists summarize their theories and what they contributed to the field of Sociology: Harriet Martineau - She was British and translated Comte's work into English. This made the field of sociological study even bigger. She also believed that the principles of study should be to improve societal conditions. For each of the following sociologists summarize their theories and what they contributed to the field of Sociology: Herbert Spencer - He was British and added to the theories of Charles Darwin and used those theories to apply them to the study of sociology. Spencer used the term 'survival of the fittest' in Darwin's theory of Social Darwinism. For each of the following sociologists summarize their theories and what they contributed to the field of Sociology: WEB DuBois - He was American and he strongly believed in equal rights for blacks. He was the leader of the Niagara Movement as well as the Co-founder of the NAACP. He studied race relations in the US and became a Professor of Sociology, History and Economics at Atlanta University. For each of the following sociologists summarize their theories and what they contributed to the field of Sociology: Emile Durkheim - He was French and is considered the father of MODERN sociology. He is an Empiricist which means he is focused on observable social phenomena. He is the founder of the Functionalist theory and spent a lot of his time studying sucide rates. For each of the following sociologists summarize their theories and what they contributed to the field of Sociology: Karl Marx - He was German and made observations of the working class in England. He was the founder of Conflict Theory and divided society between "haves" and "have nots". This means that one class has more power over the other. For each of the following sociologists summarize their theories and what they contributed to the field of Sociology: Max Weber - He was German and believed that the Protestant work ethic led to the development of capitalism. He developed the theory of Ideal Type. He was also the founder of the Symbolic Interationist theory.
