Grains (girls-5 oz./boys-6oz.) Vegetables (girls-2 cups/boys-2.5 cups) Fruit (girls/boys-1.5 cups) Milk (girls/boys-3 cups) Meat/Beans (girls/boys-5oz.) Oils (girls/boys-5 teaspoons allowed) Protein Group - All foods made from meat, poultry, seafood, beans and peas, eggs, processed soy products, nuts, and seeds Dairy Group - All fluid milk products and many foods made from milk are considered part of this food group. Foods made from milk that retain their calcium content are part of the group. Foods made from milk that have little to no calcium, such as cream cheese, cream, and butter, are not. Calcium-fortified soymilk (soy beverage) is also part of the Dairy Group Fruit Group - Any fruit or 100% fruit juice counts as part of the Fruit Group. Fruits may be fresh, canned, frozen, or dried, and may be whole, cut-up, or pureed Vegetable Group - Any vegetable or 100% vegetable juice counts as a member of the Vegetable Group. Vegetables may be raw or cooked; fresh, frozen, canned, or dried/dehydrated; and may be whole, cut-up, or mashed. Vegetables are organized into 5 subgroups, based on their nutrient content Grains Group - Any food made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley or another cereal grain is a grain product. Bread, pasta, oatmeal, breakfast cereals, tortillas, and grits are examples of grain products. Grains are divided into 2 subgroups, Whole Grains and Refined Grains. Whole grains contain the entire grain kernel - the bran, germ, and endosperm Oils - Oils are fats that are liquid at room temperature, like the vegetable oils used in cooking. Oils come from many different plants and from fish. Oils are NOT a food group, but they provide essential nutrients. Therefore, oils are included in USDA food patterns What are the six basic nutrients? - Carbohydrates, fat, protein, vitamins, minerals, and water Nutrient - A chemical substance in food that is used by the body to help it function properly How does the dietary guidelines and help in the development of a menu? - The dietary guidelines and the information from the website serve as guidelines in creating menus to insure nutritional value and balance Why are table manners important? - Help make others feel comfortable eating with you Why is it important to understand standard guidelines for setting the table? - Understanding the guidelines will help us feel comfortable hosting and attending social events when a meal is served How will understanding standard guidelines for setting the table and table manner help me in the future? - The knowledge of good table manners and table setting guidelines will help better yourself socially. It could help in job interviews or social gatherings with co-workers What is the proper placement of dinnerware, flatware and beverageware on the cover? - Dinnerware Dinner plate - center of the cover and 1" from the table's edge. Coffee cups/saucer - right of the spoon. Salad plate - above and left of the forks or on the dinner plate. Soup bowl - on the dinner plate. Bread and Butter plate - above forks. Flatware - bottoms line up with the bottom edge of the dinner plate; placed in the order of use with those being used first farthest from the plate. Forks - 1st item to the left of the plate; tines up. Knife - 1st item to the right of the dinner plate; blade toward plate. Spoons - right of the dinner plate and right of the knife; bowls up. Butter knife for bread and butter plate - rest across the top edge of the bread and butter plate with the tip to the left and the blade toward the edge of the table. Beverageware - water glass-tip of the knife; other beverageware placed
