September 6 notes:

Chapter 1: Stress & What is it?

- What is stress?
Stress can be anything and can appear in any form.
Stress will always in any case interact with something to give stress.

*Stress equation:
Stressor X ME = STRESS.
- The I in the equation is the determining factor, which means that it is i who decides
whether the stressor is stressful or not

Stressor examples:

● Death of family member
● Work
● Relationships
● Break-ups
● Pressure
● Responsibilities
● Covid
● And many more ETC…

Signs that the Individual is Stressed:

● Fatigue
● Irritable
● Insomnia
● Giving up
● Agitated
● And many more ETC…

Individual Response Stereotypy (IRS):

- The IRS is basically where snap happens. The snap meaning depends on how I control
the stress, where my weakest link is, that's where I will snap.

- An example that can further explain what IRS is thought a chain link: as explained
earlier, when a certain stressor is applied to the chain link, the stress will find the

, weakest spot on that chain and will snap. Depending on the ways of coping, we could
strengthen that specific area on the chain.

Stimulus Response Specificity (SRS):

- The SRS is not going to be the same for everyone. Meaning that, as stressors come and
depending on the type of stressor, we learn what we are able to control, and what we
aren't able to control.

- An example that could further explain SRS is as follows, as said earlier not everyone
handles stress equally, some may handle stress calmingly and others more aggressively.
Which all depend on the type and the coping method. And based on that, they could
decide which method worlds for them, and they could make changes to their coping
method to do that they are able to manage/ cope with their stress better.

● In short, in order to be stressed or to have stress, it has to come from some sort
of stressor. Then the stressor will have to have a reason for something, that
something is me, and when this interaction happens I will then become stressed.

September 8 notes:

Chapter 2: A Model for Stress and Disease:

Cardiovascular responses to stress :

- Disease is the primary outcome from stress depending on the stressor.
There are there are 3 branches that can the stress can be coming from for example
-- It could be biological meaning that it could be family history related, race, and
gender.
- Another branch would be psychological: meaning the person could have a history
of being a hostile/anger prone person. They could have anxiety or depression.

(NOTE: so far we see that even due to these two factors, they have links between them
which can link to disease further down the line.

- The third branch that can potentially lead to disease, would be through the
individual’s environment. Psychosocial stress, physiological as well as dietary
