Disorders of the upper airways
Upper respiratory tract infections: Colds
Common cold
(~80% rhinoviruses, but 200+ viral types associated, including RSV, coronaviruses, influenza, etc…)
Cold symptoms are generally immune response symptoms
• Sneezing
• Rhinorrhea (runny nose and post-nasal drip)
• Coughing
• Watery eyes
• Fever (sometimes)
• Sore throat
Upper respiratory tract infections: Inflammations of the throat
Tonsillitis
Tonsils capture microbes that would otherwise enter respiratory

inflammation
Common in 5y-15y. Tonsillectomy recommended if it recurs 7-
10 times in <3 years.
Tonsillar infections
Incidence of tonsillitis secondary to GABHS (group A strep) and
MRSA has risen in the past 15 years
Complication of infectious mononucleosis
