ITM706 – Lecture 5

ArchiMate
 ArchiMate is a technical standard developed by the Open Group
 ArchiMate is a graphical tool for modeling EA.
 ArchiMate framework is split into 3 core layers
o Business Layer
o Application Layer
o Technology Layer
 There are 2 extensions:
o Motivation and Implementation Extensions
o Migration Extensions

Business Layer:
 The business layer allows us to model our business organization, business
processes, services and products

Application Layer:
 The application layer allows us to document application landscape, and
understand dependencies between applications

Technology Layer:
 The technology layer allows us to catalog hardware, network, software and
infrastructure

ArchiMate:
 Each of these layers are further subdivided into Active Structure, Behavior and
Passive Structure Elements.
o Active Structure – structural concepts (the business actors, application
components and devices)
o Behavior (processes, functions, events, and services)
o Passive Structure – objects on which behavior is performed (information
objects, data objects)

Motivation Extension
The motivation extension allows us to take a strategic view on our business,
identifying stakeholders, drivers, goals and requirements.

Implementation and Migration Extension
Implementation and Migration layer allows us to plan our project identifying
work packages and deliverables.
