Mastication muscles:
Temporalis
Origin: Temporal fossa
Insertion: Coronoid process and anterior border of the ramus of the mandible
Function: (2) 1. Elevates the mandible @ TMJ
2. Retracts the mandible @ TMJ
Nerve: Mandibular branch of trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve 5)

Masseter
Origin: Inferior part of zygomatic arch
Insertion: Angle and ramus of mandible
Function: (2) 1. Elevates the mandible @ TMJ
2. Protracts the mandible @ TMJ
Nerve: Mandibular branch of trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve 5)

Medial pterygoid
Origin: Medial surface of the lateral pterygoid plate of the pterygoid process of the sphenoid bone
Insertion: Internal surface of the angle and inferior border of the ramus of the mandible
Function: (3) 1. Elevates the mandible @ TMJ
2. Protracts the mandible @ TMJ
3. Contralaterally deviates the mandible @ TMJ
Nerve: Mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve 5)

Lateral pterygoid
Origin: Superior head: Greater wing of the sphenoid
Inferior head: Lateral surface of the lateral pterygoid plate of the pterygoid process of the sphenoid
Insertion: Superior head: Capsule and articular disc of TMJ
Inferior head: Neck of the mandible
Function: (2) 1. Protracts the mandible @ TMJ
2. Contralaterally deviates the mandible @ TMJ
Nerve: Mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve 5)

Occipitalis
Origin: Occipital bone and mastoid process of temporal bone
Insertion: Galea aponeurotica
Frontalis
Origin: Galea aponeurotica
Insertion: Fascia and skin superior to the eye and nose
Function: (3) 1. Draws scalp posteriorly (occipitalis)
2. Draws scalp anteriorly (frontalis)
3. Elevates eyebrow (frontalis)
Nerve: Facial nerve (Cranial nerve 7)

Auricularis muscles:
Auricularis anterior
Origin: Galea aponeurotica
Insertion: Anterior ear
