Chapter 4 Material Balances:
Material balances are nothing than the application of the
“CONSERVATION LAW FOR MASS”:
Mass is neither created nor destroyed.
- Material balances are used to design the plant.
- Material balances are carried out in the plant during its operation to
improve:
● Efficiency
● Maintain production
● Reduce environmental discharge
● Maintain control of the processes in the plant.
- Material balances allow you to understand what is occurring in a
processing plant.
System : any arbitrary portion of or a whole process that you want to
consider for analysis.
System boundary : a line that encloses the portion of the process that you
want to analyze.
Batch process
For a batch process, no mass exchange occurs with surroundings, or no
mass crosses the system boundaries between the time feed is charged and
the time the product is removed.
Continuous Process
A continuous process is one in which material enters and/or leaves the
system without interruption.
Semibatch Process:
Any process that is neither batch nor continuous.
Steady-state process:
