CLIFFORD GEERTZ: DEEP PLAY
WHAT IS THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN DEEP PLAY AND SHALLOW PLAY? USE AN EXAMPLE OF A
COCKFIGHT AND THE BETTING THAT SURROUNDS THE FIGHT ITSELF
COCKFIGHT:
THE RAID
Cockfights: a blood sport between two cocks held in a ring called a cockpit
Cockfights are illegal in Bali under the Republic, as a result of puritanism
Puritanism: extreme strictness in moral or religious matters
the elite believe that the people of Bali should spend their time bettering the land and see
cockfighting as a unprogressively act
the police are called to take away cocks and spurs and sometimes give the people fines.
For this reason, many of the cockfights are held in secret
-in some instances, they do not care for what the government thinks because they were
raising money for a school that the government refuses to fund
-during this instance, the police showed up and everyone scattered, including the Geertz
couple, who were not yet accepted by the Balinese people. Due to their common man act,
they were finally known. The locals admired them for not classifying themselves as
foreigners to the police, the Balinese people teased them for what they did, which in their
culture showed acceptance, according to Geertz.

OF COCKS AND MEN
The Balinese saw their body’s as separated parts
-cocks (male chickens) are seen as extensions of the male private part and are believed to be
masculine symbols
-cock is used metaphorically by the Balinese which may mean hero, warrior, champions and
all other words that would encourage a male’s ego.
1. arrogant man: tailless rooster, who believes he is great (has a large tale)
2. desperate man: dying rooster, who stays away or tries to get out of a troubling
situation but makes a sudden movement to whose opponent as if to give the “okay”
for his death.
3. Stingy man: a rooster that taunts his opponent but does not actually attack him, a
man who promises much but gives little
4. Marriageable man still shy with the opposite sex: a fighting rooster caged for the
first time.
