1. What role does regionalism or regional identity play in ideas about Canadian
identity?
Regionalism, or regional identity, plays into the ideas about Canadian identity in many
ways. The biggest being that we as Canadians can identify ourselves by which region we
are from within the country, and our history of regionalism with the Indigenous people.
As Canada is one of the biggest countries in the world in terms of land, there are
definitely differences in Canadian identity in that play into regionalism.

The Canadian Encyclopedia defines Regionalism as “the distinctive local character of a
geographic area, or to a people’s perception of an identification with such places”. In
Canada, regional identities were first seen when European first settled among the
Indigenous tribes. Since then, Canada sees Regionalism through many different ways of
life, different religions and economies across the country. From distinctive landscapes of
farms, towns, cities, villages, and mountain landscapes, all across the breadth of Canada.

I think the best way to describe the different regional identity in Canada by comparing the
different provinces. There are the French Canadian from Quebec that eat poutine and
drink maple syrup. There are the Alberan’s who are rich from the oil, and see British
Columbia as their play ground (to spend their oil money). And then there are the East
Coast-ers who have thick accents, and like lobster and beer.

Throughout Canada, everyone has a different sense of regionalism, and I think it is one of
the best parts of our country.

2. What relationship do neoliberal governments have to the land and how is that
relationship similar to colonial settlers’ view of Indigenous women?

In the paper, The State is A Man written by Audra Simpson, the author writes about how
Theresa Spence announced that she would stop eating until Stephen Harper (the Prime
Minister of Canada at the time) and the Governor General of Canada met with her to
discuss the deplorable conditions of her life and community. She felt that the government
was failing to meet their obligation of the land and the people upon the land who were
living in contaminated conditions including poor housing and bad water. She went weeks
and weeks without eating, and the message became clear from the government. That the
conditions of this land and the people living on it had little to no value to them, and that
