Elements – a substance with only one type of atom
Mixtures – Elements, molecules, compounds not chemically bonded
Compounds – Elements, molecules, compounds chemically bonded
A pure element or compound contains only one substance. Impure materials
are a mixture of elements and compounds.
Pure substances have a sharply defined melting point
Impure substances have a temperature range over which they melt
Solute – substance that has dissolved in a liquid to make a solution
Solution – formed when a substance has dissolved in a liquid
Insoluble – substance that cannot be dissolved in a certain liquid
Residue – material remaining in the filter after mixture has passed through it
Filtrate – solution passing through a filter
Solvent – the liquid in which a solute dissolve in to make a solution
