Introduction to Social Media

WEB 2.0 –

This is the technology underlying social media and
networks. It enables ‘content generation’ for different
users accompanied by interactivity. It promotes
communication between users in a virtual community in
contrast to a rather passive viewing of content. Crossing
the barriers of creative impossibilities, social networking
sites grew from the former stage of the World Wide Web
(Web 1.0). To round up what Web 2.0 is about –

1. Web 2.0 is a collection of technologies for supporting
social and business communities and inter-personal
ties.

2. It is about supporting interaction between people.

3. Web 2.0 includes various Social Media.

4. Examples include Blogs, Wikis, Social Network Sites
(SNS), shared editors, recommender systems, review
sites, etc.

5. Despite the name there is no fundamental change to
the underlying web technology.

The Conversation Prism (Brian Solis and
JESS3) –
This was developed in 2008 and is a visual map of the
social media landscape. It depicts and tracks promising
social networks and organizes them on the basis of how
they are used in everyday life. It proves that the base of
social media is bigger than just Facebook, YouTube or
Twitter. It can be beneficial for a company in determining
its social media strategy. The picture below depicts the
social media ecosystem clearly.
