NURS 3460 Hypersensitivity (PUD) and GI Medication Table This table will make you able to “Go with your GUT ASAP!” Group / Class (Prototype) Use Therapeutic Effects Adverse Effects Safety Concerns Administration Patient Education Histamine 2 Receptor Antagonists: - Ranitidine - Cimetidine - Famotidine Used to treat PUD, GERD, esophagitis, GI bleeding, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome Action: inhibits action of histamine at H2 receptors in stomach Blocked androgen receptors (cimetidine): decr libido, gynecomastia; reverse if stopped CNS: lethargy, hallucinations, confusion, restlessness; more common in older adults/kidney or liver dysfunction Constipation, diarrhea, nausea (ranitidine): report Older adults more prone to adverse effects Caution for pregnancy, pneumonia risk, COPD Reduced dosages for kidney impairment Interactions: Warfarin, phenytoin, theophylline, lidocaine: increased levels Administered IV and orally Report signs of GI bleeding Avoid alcohol and irritating foods Limit NSAID use Increase fluid & fiber Adhere to full treatment regimen and see provider - - -
