, Electron configuration
■ It is the distribution of e- of an atom or molecule.
■ Representation of the arrangement of electrons distributed among the orb
shells and subshells.
■ Often used to describe the orbitals of an atom in it’s ground state.
■ Also used to describe/represent an atom that has ionised to an anion (-ve
charged ion) or cation (+vely charged ion).
■ Electron configuration of an element depends on it’s position in the period
table.
, Electron shells
■ An e- shell is a set of allowed states that share the same principal number
(the # before the letter I the orbital label), that electrons may occupy .
– Example - 1st shell can occupy 2e-, 2nd shell 8e-, 3rd shell 18 e- etc.
