Week 11 - Water
Overview
Most abundant component of the body
Birth: 70 - 80% of body's weight
Adults: 50 - 60% of body weight
Adipose tissue contain less water than lean body mass LBM
Water
Body fluid
Intracellular fluid ICF
Extracellular fluid ECF
Osmotic pressure equalizes the solute concentration of ICF & ECF
Roles
Enable chemicals reactions to occur by entering into some reactions,
such as hydrolysis
Maintain stability of all body fluids, as the principle component &
medium for fluids (blood & lymph), secretions (saliva & GI fluids), &
excretions (urine & perspirations)
Enable transport of nutrients to cells & provide medium for excretion of
waste products
Act as lubricate between cells to permit movement without friction
Regulate body temperature by evaporating as perspiration from skin &
vapor from mouth & nose
Requirements
Men = 3.7L 15 - 16 cups/day)
Women = 2.7L 1112 cups)/day
Week 11 - Water 1
, Water is lost through
Urination
Perspiration
Expriration
Defecation
Sources of water
Plain tap water
Others: soft drinks, sports energy drinks, vitamin water, other drinks
Energy drinks contain high kilocalorie and caffeine levels
Beverages containing acidic flavorings may result in erosion
Hyperstate
Fluid volume excess FVE
