Etymology - the study of names and words and how they're meaning has changed over time
Prefix - letters added to the beginning of a word to change its meaning
GENERAL INFORMATION
- Indigenous culture has never had handwritten alphabets
- only spoken
- communicated through symbols / shapes
- everything on the poster is a European interpretation/translation
- in Canada there is about 55 indigenous languages
- hand prints equal diversity within indigenous groups
- languages differ from one another
- everyone in the photo is indigenous
- be mindful of stereotypes / diversity
- they are not all the same (different beliefs, languages etc)

WHY ARE THE INDIGENOUS AND BLACK COMMUNITIES RELATED?
Africans were brought over as slaves to replace indigenous slaves, they were both victims of
European slavery and colonization.
OVER ARCHING TERMS
Indian - Columbus called indigenous Indians because they thought they landed in India. This
was the first term for the indigenous peoples. Later, once the Europeans figured out that they
were not in India, the term “Indian” had already caught on, and was used regardless of its
accuracy. We still use this term in geography, politics, law and status cards (not socially)
Native - A person who is born in a specified place or associated with a place by birth, whether
subsequently resident there or not. This term came from the government in the late 1800s.
Pejorative - Expressing contempt or disapproval. The term native became this, as it was used as a
slang insult term referring to the indigenous as uncivilized and savage.
Aboriginal - Not original; The prefix ‘Ab’ means ‘not original peoples’ which doesn't make sense. It was
used from the 1980s to 2020.
Indigenous - Originating or occurring naturally in a particular place; native. The UN created this
term since other countries were using different terms. This term was not set by a government; this term
refers to indigenous peoples all around the world. The one critique of this term is that you don’t know
exactly what kind of indigenous peoples you are talking about. Used from ~ 2020 - now.
