The Respiratory System




Lung - the major air-sac like organ that is in charge of breathing and respiration
Larynx - area of the throat that contains the vocal box used for breathing,
swallowing, and talking
Pharynx - muscular tube in the middle of your neck
Trachea - long U shaped tube connecting your larynx to your lungs
Bronchi - passageways connecting your windpipe to your lungs
Bronchioles - the smallest airways in your lungs
Epiglottis - small, moveable “lid” just above the pharynx preventing food and drink
from entering the windpipe
Glottis - the hole connecting to the trachea with the epiglottis right above
preventing food and water from going down
Alveoli - small air sacs where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide take
place
Diaphragm - major muscle of respiration
Tidal Volume - amount of air that moves in or out of the lungs with each
respiratory cycle
