Language Barrier for International Students
Most students desire an opportunity to study abroad. Many who get the opportunity to do
so lose sleep over the idea of an exciting college life in a different country. This desire and
dreams are multiplied when that country is America. For students who come from non-English
speaking countries the experience offers the opportunity to make new friends, learn a new
culture and language, as well as become more tolerant of other people’s ideas. But the notion of
college life abroad is very different from the actual experience. Although it is exciting and there
are a lot of new experiences, a foreign student abroad goes through a whole lot of challenges.
Main among these troubles is the trouble of language. The fear of misgiving in a foreign culture
is reinforced when a student cannot clearly communicate with peers in a clear manner. A well
planned and executed language an integration program will do better in helping international
students cope in a foreign environment than strict language classes in college.
This program will include language improvement sessions that help foreign students to
increase their confidence levels and vocabulary. This will be achieved through, first, offering
these students access to native speakers within campus and other areas where they will feel safe
and comfortable. Talking is the key to good communication. No matter how much time one
spends reading on a language, without communication all that effort counts for nothing. The
main aim of this phase of the program, therefore, will be to get foreign students to speak more.
