Comparing mood disorders
 On a scale and people can fluctuate through situations
o Hypomania: high energy; often more productive
o Mania: levels of distress an impairment of function; very rare to see it by
itself
o Cyclothymia: wont reach extreme ends, but will have lessened experiences
of the extremes
o Bipolar disorder (Type II): never reached manic state, but has depressive
episodes
o Bipolar disorder (Type I): has manic and depressive states

What is bipolar disorder?
 Bipolar means "to ends"
o Unipolar means "one end" which is like depression
 It is a mental illness that brings severe high and low moods and changes in sleep, energy,
thinking, and behavior. Importantly, it must interfere with daily functioning
 Full remission: fully recover between episodes
 Partial remission: retains some symptoms between episodes
