CANNOT initiate or maintain:
• Blood or blood components
• Solution for tpn
• Cancer or chemotherapy agents
• An IV piggyback , except an antibiotic
• Start or DC any catheter longer than 3 inches
• DC a central venous , arterial, or any other line that does not terminate in a
peripheral vein
• Change tubing on an anterior line
• Admin meds by direct IV
• Mix prep or reconstitute any meds for IV
• Program or set any function of a PCA
• Draw blood from central lines
• Cannot IV push meds
LPN may do the following:
• For individuals 18 and up under the direction of a dentist, physician,
optometrist, podiatrist, or RN
• Can administer IV bolus meds
• Administer the following solutions per peripheral line or central IV line
5% dextrose and water (D5W)
5 % dextrose and lactated ringer (D5/LR) 5
% dextrose and normal saline (D5/NS)
normal saline, (NS) (0.9% NaCl)
lactated ringers
0.45 % sodium chloride and water (0.45% NaCl) (1/2 NS)
0.2 % sodium chloride and water (0.2% NaCl) (1/4 NS)
• Admin any solution listed above that contain vitamins and electrolytes AFTER
RN has initially hung first solutions with added vits and electrolytes
• Initiate or maintain a IVPB ( secondary IV infusion)
