These forms express unreal or imagined actions in the past. They reflect what
could've, would've, or should've happened — but didn't.
Structure:
Subject + could/would/should have + past participle (V3)
✨Could Have + Past Participle
Used to express possibility or past ability that didn't happen.
Positive Sentences:
I could have passed the test. (It was possible, but I didn’t)
She could have traveled to Paris. (She had the chance)
They could have won the game. (Victory was possible)
He could have spoken earlier. (But he stayed quiet)
We could have taken a taxi. (But we walked)
Negative Sentences:
He could not have done it alone. (Not possible for him)
We couldn’t have known. (No way we could know)
You couldn’t have handled it better. (You did your best)
They couldn’t have arrived on time. (It wasn’t possible)
I couldn’t have imagined this. (It was beyond my thinking)
