Evaluating Whether an Article is Behavior Analytic or Not
The determination of whether an article is behavior analytic is an elusive process.
However, Baer, Wolf and Risley (1968) developed a framework of dimensions that have been
universally accepted and adopted in determining the alignment of an article with behavioral
analysis. In this paper, two articles are scrutinized through seven basic dimensions proposed by
Baer, Wolf and Risley (1968) to demonstrate why one of the articles is behavior analytic while
the other is not.
Seven Dimensions Table
Which article is behavior analytic? (use the in-text citation):
Bukley et al. (2018).
Dimension Explanation (1-2 sentences)
Generality This is the replicability of outcomes over an extended period
and other settings. The study was conducted in a closed
setting and with pharmacy students. Its not clear whether the
outcomes are replicable in other settings, with students taking
other courses.
Effective This requires that a study treatment has altered a behavior of
interest to a significant level, such that the change exhibits
results that are socially important to subjects or social settings
(Baer, Wolf & Risley, 1968). In the article, Bukley et al.
(2018) behavioral impacts (improvements) associated with
the mock job interviews -confidence and feeling of
preparedness before and after mock interviews among final
year pharmacy students are measured.
Technological This dimension requires that all procedures be described in a
precise way, such that in future, another person can replicate
the steps and achieve the same results (Baer, Wolf & Risley,
1968). Materials used, interview procedures, duration of
interviews, analysis and all subsequent interventions are
clearly described in the article. Majority of participants
strongly agreed that the mock interview improved confidence
and preparedness for residency interviews.
