Description of Skill
CONSIDERATIONS
Indications
-Repeated blood sampling
-IV administration of fluids Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post)
-IV administration of medications
-Check the prescription
-Follow the rights of medication administration-
Prepare medications in the correct
concentration and at a safe rate.
-Use extreme caution and observing for adverse
reactions or complications
Outcomes/Evaluation
Client Education
-Document patient’s tolerance of the procedure -Instruct the patient about the procedure and the
-Document the date and time of IV placement reason that it has been ordered
-Document effectiveness of treatment and patient -Advise the patient to lie in a comfortable position
outcome -Instruct to call for assistance if venipuncture site
becomes tender or sore or if redness or swelling
develops
Potential Complications Nursing Interventions
-Fluid overload is possible if the volume of the solution -Assess the IV site for signs of infiltration
is large or the infusion rate is rapid extravasation or phlebitis
-Immediate absorption leaves little time to correct -Change IV site every 72 hours or according to
errors hospital policy
-Failure to maintain surgical asepsis can lead to local
and systemic infection
-Infiltration or extravasation
-Phlebitis or thrombophlebitis
