Organized Physical Therapy came to the US bc of - ANSWER -polio in 1800s and early

helped rehabilitate soldiers injured in the war



Mary McMillan - ANSWER -professionally trained in England moved to the US to become
the first PT

-head reconstruction aide for the army in 1918

-founding president of the American Women's Physical Therapeutic Association in 1921



Reconstruction Aides - ANSWER -first group assisted physicians by providing exercise
programs, massage, hydrotherapy these became PTs

-second group provided vocational skills and would evolve into OTs



After the war Reconstruction Aides - ANSWER continued to work with children and
others with polio



training programs were developed in hospitals where the need for physical therapy was
the greatest



American Women's Physical Therapeutic Association - ANSWER -became necessary to
establish a professional identity for individuals to provide rehab care

-new organization was developed to represent this new profession

-formed in 1921 to maintain professional standards and encourage advanced study

,-PT Review which is now known as the Physical Therapy Journal

-named changed in 1922 to the American Physiotherapy Association (APA) to allow men
to be admitted



First Educational Requirements for PTs - ANSWER -APA developed the first formal

Social Awareness 1960s-1980s - ANSWER -federal legislation funded health care which
increased the demand for PT

-dramatic increase in the number of educational programs

-in 1960 the APTA identified the baccalaureate degree as the minimum degree for entry
level for PTs

-American board of Physical Therapy Specialties created inn 1978
