• Important Idea
Considering only the Introduction to Chapter 5, in terms of developing critical
thinking and reasoning, what do you consider is the most valuable and important idea in that
section? Briefly explain why you find this idea important and valuable. What I consider the
most valuable/important idea in the section was when the authors said that “Our goal is to
analyze exactly what people’s claims are and the reasons they use to establish them as worthy of
acceptance” (Facione & Gittens, 2016). I find this idea valuable because before we can deny a
person’s clams as unworthy, we need to really think about what they claim to be true in a deeper
and unbiased manner. Many times, we tend to dismiss people and the way that they think
because we are only focused on what we believe to be right. Doing that can make one to be
selfish, and even somewhat ignorant. When we have an open mind, we tend to be able to
understand one another’s way of thinking better.
• Critical Thinking
In Chapter 5, the section "Making Arguments" states: "In some ways applying our
core critical thinking skills to analysis can be more difficult than offering an
evaluative opinion. Analysis, like interpretation, is understanding at a deep level” (p.
89) What concepts discussed in Chapter 4 might make analysis of a statement difficult
– and why?
The concepts discussed in Chapter 4 that might make a statement analysis difficult are
vagueness and Ambiguity. They both can cause misunderstanding in communication and context.
Vagueness is defined as having absence of certainty or distinctness regarding communication and
context. An example of vagueness could be “drive straight, the turn left” that statement is vague
because, how long will that person have to drive straight? Do they turn left at a stop sign? More
clarity is needed when giving directions. Ambiguity is defined as statement having multiple
interpretations which can cause misunderstandings. An example of Ambiguity is “Tony proposed
to his girlfriend wearing a blue shirt”. That is considered an Ambiguity statement because one
