A cryogenic material would be carried in an:
MC-331
High Pressure tank truck, carries liquefied gases, anhydrous ammonia, LPG, Looks
like a bullet, holds 11500 gallons, generally above 100psi,
Cargo Tanks have compartments where they carry the materials they are
transporting. They can have a single compartments or multiple.
Specification Plate
The specification plate is mounted on the left of the tank on truck and trailer
units.
Specification plates before 1985
The plate will be mounted on the right front of the tank
Older trailer specification plates
Mounted on the right side of the fifth wheel or slide plate
,Specification 306
indicated that the tank meets DOT requirements of non pressure cargo tank
The letters following the DOT specification are abreviations
AL Aluminum
CS Carbon Steel
SS Stainless Steel
MS Mild Steel
HSLA High Strength Low Alloy Steel
HSLA-QT High Strength Low Alloy, Quench Tempered Steel
Maximum Capacities of Compartment (Spec Plate)
This area shows the maximum capacity (in gallons) that each compartment, will
hold (in order, from front to rear). If the tank is a single compartment, the total
capacity of the tank will appear here.
Max product load (weight) Spec Plate
This number indicates the weight of the maximum product load. On corrosive
carriers, the number shown is the maximum weight per gallon that the tank will
hold.
Design pressure (Spec Plate)
The design pressure provides the working or max allowable pressure for the
particular tank.
Head Material Composition
This area shows the composition or strength of the materials used for the head.
Shell Material Composition
This area is used to indicate the composition or strength of the materials used for
the shell.
Weld Material Composition
This area indicates the compostion or strength of the materials used on the weld.
Lining Type
, if the tank is lined, this area shows the type of lining. If this area has been left
blank, then the tank is not lined.
Maximum Temperature (Spec Plate)
This area shows the max temp at which the tank will safely carry the material
without failure.
Compartmentalized Cargo Tanks
Have different parts that distinguish them
Overfill Hose
Baffles
Compartments
Manway
Double Bulkheads
Internal Safety Valve
Overfill Hose
On double bulkhead compartments, there are small vents and drain plugs from
both top and bottom of the space between bulkheads. These are visible on the
outside of the tank.
Baffles
Minimizes product surges during transportation
Comparments
Each compartment with a capacity greater than 400 gallons (1,514 liters) must
have its own manyway assembly or dome cover
Manway
Tanks with capacities of 2,500 gallons (9,466 liters) or more are fitted with
manway assemblies. Manways are large openings on the top of cargo tanks or on
the back head on most pressure cargo tanks. They allow access to the interior of
the tank for inspection, cleaning, and repairs.
