In South Africa, GBV has been described as one of the country’s most pervasive human rights violations, affecting women and girls disproportionately while also impacting men and individuals in LGBTIQ+ communities (Republic of South Africa, 2020). Its effects go beyond the immediate physical and psychological harm to survivors; GBV also imposes long-term social and economic costs that limit development and deepen inequality (Commission for Gender Equality, 2020). This assignment aims to critically examine GBV by focusing on four key aspects: the definition of GBV, the different types of violence that fall under this category, the impact on both survivors and society, and strategies for prevention and response. It will also highlight two organisations working actively to combat GBV and provide services to survivors. The discussion will demonstrate that addressing GBV requires a comprehensive, multisectoral approach that combines prevention, survivor-centred support, community awareness, and strong partnerships between government, civil society, and local communities. By situating the discussion within the South African context, this paper underscores the urgent need for integrated responses at both national and local levels to reduce violence and
