It creates two cultures:

Victorian and Working class cultures

Farmers raise crops as commodities worth money in a market setting.

More and more people begin to act as competing individuals to make a profit.

The ultimate result of this is industrialization.



Household economy - answer-Existed before the market revolution.

Before 1790 economy was community oriented and people bartered a lot.

,In colonial America the economy wasn't about making profit. It was about
survival



Task oriented work - answer-Work is determined by seasons, labor was
determined by the tasks needed to be completed.



Transcontinental Railroad - answer-Linked the east and west coast. Started the
beginning of the end of westward expansion.



Oklahoma Land Rush - answer-Oklahoma territory had originally been set aside
for Indian tribes, but now it is opened to white settlers in 1889. Settlers got to
rush into Oklahoma territory to claim land. Over the next 2-3 years had claim
holders that would hold onto their claims. It was the last territory in the west
to be settled in this fashion. Transition from horizontal expansion to vertical
expansion.




New York Gold Conspiracy - answer-Jay Gould and some of his associates
bought up all the gold on the New York market. And then the price of gold
went up and they dumped it and sold it all and made a fortune.



Tramp Culture - answer-People who can't take working in factories anymore
and travel, working here and there, steal when they needed, etc.

took it out on the streets and burned it

Share Cropping - answer-Big land owners would be absent and they'd lease
their land to white and black farmers. The land owners would expect a portion
of the crop at the end of the year. Farmers really weren't making much money
and they became enslaved to the land. Resentment to share cropping began.



The Grange Movement - answer-1874. The grange was a cooperative
movement that brought farmers together for buying and selling in the market
place to try to get farmers a better deal. Tried to get leverage in the market.



National Farmer's Alliance - answer-1880s. They adopted the entire agenda of
the Grange movement but also went a little further making political
suggestions. Wanted the government to regulate the railroads. Also wanted a
reduction of the federal tariff. A high tariff discriminated against farmers
because high tariffs led to trade wars. They wanted the federal government to
set up a system of warehouses to hold grain and other nonperishables in case
of crisis government had a ton of extra grain to sell.



The People's Party - answer-1890s. One of the most influential third party ever,
becomes a political party for farmers. Aimed to unite southern and northern
farmers and bridge the racial divide by saying black and white farmers had
common interests.



Tom Watson - answer-A leader of people's party, eloquent speaker, got himself
a big reputation
