, Question 1 – Literature Review Design
1a) Conceptual vs Theoretical Framework
Definitions:
Theoretical framework: Built on established theories, it provides a lens to
explain the relationships between variables. For example, it may rely on
Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory or constructivist principles.
Conceptual framework: A model created by the researcher to illustrate key
concepts, variables, and their interconnections. It is informed by existing
literature but shaped by the researcher’s perspective.
Differences:
Origin: Theoretical frameworks are drawn from existing, widely accepted
theories, while conceptual frameworks are designed by the researcher.
Scope: Theoretical frameworks are narrower and theory-bound; conceptual
frameworks are broader and adaptable.
Flexibility: Conceptual frameworks allow more integration of ideas from multiple
theories, unlike theoretical frameworks which are fixed to a particular theory.
Purpose: A theoretical framework explains phenomena within the boundaries of
a specific theory, while a conceptual framework maps how a study is structured.
Recommendation: For a study on technology-enhanced teaching and learner
engagement, a conceptual framework is more suitable because:
Research in educational technology is dynamic and constantly evolving.
It enables the integration of different theories such as Self-Determination Theory
and TPACK.
It provides room for context-driven, practical recommendations in education.
