PAT 201 EXAM QUESTIONS AND 100%
CORECT ANSWERS!!
Why do we care about sample rate/bit depth?

Sample rate affects high frequency response, and bit depth affects the dynamic range, noise and
distortion. With a low sample rate, high frequencies will be weaker, and with a low bit-rate
dynamics will be dulled, noise will be present, and a sample will be distorted. These concepts are
very important to the clarity and quality of sound. Low bit depth can also be utilized as an effect.

Why are higher bit depths preferable?

The longer a word, the more bits it has and the more accurate each signal measurement is.
Longer words give good resolution (low distortion), whereas short words give poor resolution
(high distortion).

What is aliasing of high frequencies?

Aliasing is when the sampling rate is too low and false data of the lower frequencies gets
recorded. The higher frequencies are then distorted with the lower frequencies, and incorrect
signals are reproduced.

How does an analog-digital converter prevent aliasing?

An analog-digital converter runs samples through a low pass filter that removes all frequencies
above 20kHz (anti-aliasing filter). The range of human hearing doesn't go above 20kHz, but if
the low frequencies alias, the effect on the high frequencies (even those above 20kHz) is
perceived by the human ear as distortion. Thus, the anti-aliasing filter cuts out the high
frequencies to prevent aliasing between the high and low frequencies.

How does an analog-digital converter work?

An analog-digital converter measures (or samples) the voltage of an audio waveform several
thousand times per second, quantizes it (generates binary digits or "bits" that are representative
of the signal), and then stores the recording as a modulate square wave recorded at maximum
level.

, What is the Red Book CD Standard?

Red Book is a document released by Sony and Philips in the 1980's that defines the standards for
a CD. According to the Red Book, CD data should be digitized at 44,100 samples per second
(44.1kHz) in a range of 16 bits (65,536 possible values).

What is Audio Quantization?

Quantization is the process in which a analog-digital converter measures the voltage of an audio
waveform and generates representative binary numbers.

What does frequency response mean?

A graph of how a particular device (microphone) responds to certain frequencies that plots
output level vs. frequency. A horizontal line indicates a "flat frequency response" meaning that
the device level is the same at all frequencies. Most devices do not have a flat frequency
response, rather, they respond to a specific range of frequencies.

What equipment/connections are needed to record a singer in logic? (check with Jeremy)

Where does logic store audio data?

In the project folder/project file

What is a sequencer (what does logic do?)

A device or software that can record, edit, or play back music. It does this by handling note and
performance information in different formats (ex. MIDI), and audio and automation data for
DAW's and plugins.

What does input monitor do in logic?

Input monitor allows you to listen to and set the level of the sound you are recording before
recording.

How do you make a track go into input monitor mode?

Click the "I" button in the track header.

What does non-realtime processing/destructive editing mean? Give an example
